Easy Ev

Customer Setting b4

For those Nikon users, that are using the D3 series, and I encourage other Nikon body users to check this tip out.  I will start out with, that even after a few years with this machine stuck to my face and pondering all of its dials, button, features and software,,,,I thought I had most of it figured out.   Then as it so happens, I cam across the NIKON D3s TECHNICAL Guide, and an old problem, with new information became tolerable.

What I am talking about is the that two fingered salute we have to do to set the Ev up or down when in Aperture , Shutter or Program mode.   I think you know the one I’m talking about. It is kind of the first move you learn to take on the DLSR.  While in Aperture mode, adjust your aperture setting with the front sub command dial, then adjust your Ev to -.5 stop, by (with the camera on your face, (usually) hunting with your right index finger for a little button on the top of the camera just below the on/off switch, then simultaneously moving the main command dial left or right.  As illustrated  in  the NIKON D3S Manual

Typical Ev Adjustment

The new news( for me anyway) and maybe for you… is that the technical guide gives you a bit more information, on a custom setting (B4) to program the command dial and subcommand dial, so you can stop hunting for the top mounted Ev button.  This is important, because as you look thru the viewfinder and decide if you need to adjust for exposure, you can simple move the command dial…why is this important again, well it is snowing here in NY, and quite cold at 20 degrees, and my wooly mitts can’t find that damn button on the top !

Now with this programed into my D3s, the front dial is used for aperture and the rear for Ev, slick….
