It’s early daybreak at this Castleton, NY Buffalo farm near the state capital. I took quite a number of images over a two day period with my Nikon D3s and 20-400mm. While shooting the Images I begain to wonder how this herd came to be, and based on the owners website, an interesting history is available. The farm has it roots dating back to 1793 and is still being worked by the same family. The current owner George Mesick reintroduced the Bison into this part of NY back in 1973 where it had not been seen for two hundred years. The Bison found on he farm come from bloodlines from Nebraska, Iowa and Pennsylvania.
My main tip for getting your Images is to be patient and diligent. The critters go from sleepy docile to alert and to moving very quickly. They definitely have a herd mentality and you need to wait a bit to get an isolated shot with facial expressions and eye contact.. Finally keep an eye on your sun light, shadows are enhanced and their coats have a nice saturated reflecting glow.
